Estimates for India’s broader home healthcare market are already in the range of $8–10 billion, with the sector expected to expand as healthcare increasingly moves beyond hospitals and into people’s homes.

At the same time, India is seeing growing interest in senior living, retirement communities and assisted living.

But there is another important reality that deserves attention:

For a large proportion of Indian elders, the preferred place to age is still home.

Home Is More Than a Place

For an older person, home isn’t simply four walls and a bedroom.

It may be the house where their children grew up.

It may be the kitchen where they cooked for their family for decades.

It may be the neighbourhood where everyone knows them.

It may be the chair where they read the newspaper every morning.

It may be the balcony where they have had the same cup of tea for 30 years.

Moving into a senior living or assisted-living facility can provide significant benefits, including professional care, safety, social interaction and access to support.

But moving away from home can also mean leaving behind something that is difficult to replace: familiarity.

That emotional connection is an important part of understanding India’s eldercare market.

What Does the Data Tell Us?

The Longitudinal Ageing Study in India (LASI), one of India’s largest studies of ageing, provides an interesting picture of how older Indians live.

Among Indians aged 60 and above, approximately 41% live with their spouse and children, while another 28% live with children without a spouse. Together, these represent roughly 68% of older adults living with children.

About 20% live with a spouse only, while approximately 6% live alone.

The data also suggests that family remains central to the support system of older Indians.

Among older adults without a spouse, 70% say they share most of their personal matters with their children or grandchildren.

This doesn’t mean that every elder wants to live with their children.

Nor does it mean that senior living is unsuitable.

It does, however, demonstrate the continuing importance of family, familiarity and home in the Indian ageing experience.

Why Do Elders Prefer Home?

There isn’t one answer.

Every family is different, but several factors help explain the preference.

1. Familiarity Creates Comfort

As people age, familiar surroundings can become increasingly important.

The bedroom they’ve slept in for years.

The neighbours they know.

The local temple, church or market.

Their favourite chair.

The photographs on the wall.

These seemingly ordinary things can provide a powerful sense of identity and continuity.

Home allows an elder to remain surrounded by the environment they know rather than adapting to an entirely new setting.

2. Independence Matters

Ageing does not automatically mean losing independence.

Many seniors want assistance with certain activities while continuing to make their own decisions.

They may need help with:

Bathing

Mobility

Medication reminders

Meals

Doctor visits

Household activities

Companionship

But they may still want to decide when they wake up, what they eat, whom they meet and how they spend their day.

Home care can potentially provide support without requiring a complete change in lifestyle.

3. Family Remains Important

Indian families continue to play a significant role in eldercare.

LASI describes family as an important part of the social support system for older adults in India.

For many elders, living at home means their children and grandchildren can remain part of their everyday lives.

A grandchild visiting after school.

A son having dinner with his parents.

A daughter calling every evening.

A family celebration around the same dining table.

These interactions can be difficult to replicate simply by moving into a care facility.

4. Home Does Not Have to Mean “No Professional Care”

This is perhaps the most important distinction.

The choice doesn’t necessarily have to be:

Home OR professional care.

It can be:

Home WITH professional care.

An elder can remain in familiar surroundings while receiving help from trained caregivers, nurses, physiotherapists, companions and other professionals.

This creates a third model between completely independent living and residential care.

The Rise of “Care at Home”

Healthcare itself is increasingly moving toward the home.

Advances in technology, remote monitoring, telemedicine and home healthcare are making it possible to deliver more services outside hospitals and institutions. Recent reporting has put India’s home healthcare market at approximately $8–10 billion, with significant room for organized expansion.

For eldercare, this creates an interesting opportunity.

Instead of asking:

“How do we move seniors into care?”

the industry can increasingly ask:

“How do we bring the right care to seniors where they already live?”

That could include everything from a few hours of companionship to round-the-clock caregiving, mobility assistance, post-hospital support, nursing and rehabilitation.

Does This Mean Senior Living Is Not the Answer?

Not at all.

Senior living and assisted living can be highly valuable for certain individuals and families.

They can offer:

24/7 support

Social interaction

Community

Structured activities

Medical assistance

Greater supervision

Relief for families who cannot provide daily support

And acceptance is evolving. Recent reporting from Indian cities shows that some seniors are increasingly considering assisted living not only for medical reasons but also for companionship, independence and social connection.

The point is not that one model is better than another.

The right model depends on the elder.

Someone who is socially isolated or requires intensive supervision may benefit greatly from a residential community.

Someone who is relatively independent but needs assistance with daily activities may prefer to remain at home.

Someone recovering from surgery may need intensive support temporarily and then return to independent living.

The Future May Be More Flexible

Perhaps the biggest opportunity in Indian eldercare is not choosing between two extremes.

It is creating a continuum of care.

Independent living

↓

Occasional assistance

↓

Daily home care

↓

Specialized nursing / rehabilitation

↓

24-hour home care

↓

Assisted living

↓

Clinical or institutional care when required

This gives families the flexibility to increase or decrease support as circumstances change.

The Question India Needs to Ask

India’s ageing population is creating a large economic opportunity, but eldercare is ultimately not just about economics.

It is about dignity.

It is about independence.

It is about family.

And it is about giving older people choices.

For many Indian elders, that choice may still be:

“Let me stay in my home.”

The opportunity for the eldercare industry, therefore, may not simply be to build more places for seniors to live.

It may also be to build better ways for seniors to live well where they already are.

Because sometimes the best place to care for an elder isn’t somewhere new.

It’s home.

And the future of eldercare may be about bringing the care to them.

Why India’s eldercare market is entering an important phase.
